The walls of the ovarian tubes are lined with tiny, hair-like structures called cilia, which help move the egg along the tube. Fertilization of the egg typically occurs within the first third of the tube closest to the ovary.
The ovarian tubes also play an important role in the early development of the embryo, as the fertilized egg typically implants in the lining of the uterus a few days after fertilization.
